2009 NFL Mock Draft Round 2
By: Buckrock101
1. Detroit Lions- Nate Davis (QB) Ball State
It seems like Drew Stanton may not be
the guy anymore at QB, and in that case the Lions will no doubt be
looking at a QB in the draft this year. Davis has a strong arm, good
accuracy and good mobility, and looks like a clone of Aaron Rodgers
to me. His main concern is the level of opposition he has played,
playing in the MAC. He is still great value here,
however.
2. Oakland Raiders- Demetrius Byrd (WR) Louisiana
State Oakland have
invested their franchise in JaMarcus Russell, and they now need to
give him two things- a legitimate offensive line, and a legitimate
receiving corps. With Andre Smith taken in the first, they now take
a future starter at WR, in Byrd, a very good all-round WR with a lot
of upside.
3. Cincinnati Bengals- Jasper Brinkley (ILB) South
Carolina Dhani Jones
is just a stopgap measure at ILB, and the Bengals need to pick up a
replacement in this draft. Brinkley is my #2 at the position (behind
Spikes), and is a big, strong LB who will really improve
Cincinnati’s run defense.
4. Kansas City Chiefs- James Laurinaitis (ILB) Ohio
State More talent here
for what is becoming a very good young defense in Kansas City.
Laurinaitis slots in from day one at inside linebacker, and he,
Dorsey and Selvie make for a great defense in the years to
come.
5. St Louis Rams- Max Unger (OT) Oregon
The Rams finally get some OL help, for one of the worst
units in the NFL. Marc Bulger needs someone to protect his
blindside, and Steven Jackson needs someone to run block at left
tackle... Unger, a leader on a very good run blocking line, will
provide both those
things.
6. Cleveland Browns- Rey Maualuga (ILB) Southern
California The Browns need a stud thumper LB inside in
their 3-4 system, and Maualuga is just that. A great fit for
Cleveland’s defense, which is in need of major
improvement.
7. Seattle Seahawks- Zac Robinson (QB) Oklahoma
State Robinson has
been playing great this season, and if he is to come out he may well
end up as a first day pick. He has the physical tools, together with
good accuracy and decision making. He needs a bit of work, but he is
able to learn behind Matt Hasselbeck for a year or two here. Hass is
nearing the end of his career, so they will need a replacement for
the future.
8. Houston Texans- Auston
English (DE) Oklahoma Houston needs a pass rusher to complement Mario Williams, and
they get a good value pick with English here. The Sooners pass
rusher is a very well rounded DE, with good athleticism and a very
good motor.
9. San Francisco 49ers- Jamon
Meredith (OT/OG) South Carolina San Francisco needs OL help, and Meredith is a
good guy to provide that. A guy with experience at both tackle and
guard, Meredith can help improve a unit that has struggled to block
for Frank Gore, one of the league’s best
runners.
10. New York Jets (f/NO)- Rashad Johnson (S)
Alabama Kerry Rhodes is one of the top 2 safeties in
the NFL, but the Jets need an improvement at the other spot. Johnson
is a ballhawking safety how has been showing his class in recent
weeks, especially against LSU, in which he had 3
interceptions.
11. Minnesota Vikings- Captain Munnerlyn (CB) South
Carolina Minnesota’s pass defense has been very bad
this year, and they really need an upgrade at cornerback. Munnerlyn
is a very underrated corner, and a steal at this point. He has very
good speed and is physical to
boot.
12. Jacksonville Jaguars- Sen’Derrick Marks (DT)
Auburn Jacksonville used to have the league’s best DT
pairing with Henderson and Stroud, but it is now an area they need
upgraded. Marks is great value here, and will step in and make an
impact early.
13. Green Bay Packers- Dorell Scott (DT) Clemson
The Pack’s run defense has been
pitiful at times, so there should be no doubt that help is needed on
the DL early in the 2009 draft. Scott is exactly the type of player
needed, a guy who is strong and good against the run. The Clemson DT
is also able to get penetration, and is a good all-round
DT.
14. Buffalo Bills- Jonathan Luigs (C) Arkansas
The weak spot on Buffalo’s line is center, and luckily
for them a class center falls to them
here.
15. Miami Dolphins- D.J. Moore (CB) Vanderbilt
Two CBs in the first two rounds?
Unexpected, but I could see it happening. Miami’s secondary really
is lacking, and adding both Davis and Moore will be a huge boost to
the Dolphins’ pass defense.
16. New
England Patriots (f/SD)- Alphonso Smith (CB) Wake
Forest New England
lost Asante Samuel in the offseason, and really have suffered due to
that. If they want to avoid getting burnt by Brett Favre regularly,
they will have to add some more talent. Smith is great value
here.
17. Denver Broncos-
Emmanuel Cook (S) South Carolina The Broncos are very
weak at safety, and could do with a safety like Cook. He is well
built and great against the run, as well as being an excellent
blitzer. He has 4.4-4.5 speed on top of that, and is pretty good in
coverage.
18. Chicago Bears- Robert Ayers (DE) Tennessee
The Bears are struggling to get a pass rush right now,
so they take the best available DE here. Ayers is a well-built and
well-rounded DE prospect who is good against both the run and the
pass.
19. Baltimore Ravens- Mardy Gilyard (WR)
Cincinnati Joe Flacco
needs playmakers to throw to, and Gilyard is a perfect example. The
Bearcats receiver is a speedy deep threat, who has been playing
excellent football this year. He is also a great return
man.
20. New
England Patriots- Shonn Greene (RB) Iowa The Patriots have been struggling to run the
ball lately with Maroney out, so they pick up some help in that area
here. Greene is a punishing runner who is tough to take down, and
will add another dimension to this
offense.
21. Green Bay Packers (f/NYJ)- Trevor Canfield (OG)
Cincinnati Guard is
really a weak position for the Packers, so I’d be disappointed if
they didn’t go out and get help on the first day, especially with
the Jets’ second rounder. Canfield is a very good fit for the ZBS,
and will provide a big upgrade.
22. Atlanta Falcons- Chase Coffman (TE) Missouri
The Falcons need a pass catching TE, and Coffman has
shown this year that he is an elite pass catcher. His addition gives
Matt Ryan another weapon, and just further improves this team that
is on the way back up.
23. Dallas Cowboys- Louis
Vasquez (OG) Texas Tech Dallas’ O-Line has been underachieving this year, whereas
Vasquez has been playing great. Big, well-built and powerful, the
Texas Tech guard is a great pass blocker and a very good run blocker
as well, and will give a solid platform for Romo and
Barber.
24. Tampa Bay Buccaneers- Arthur Jones (DT)
Syracuse Tampa Bay
needs an upgraded UT, a position Jones fits perfectly. He is very
good value here.
25. Arizona Cardinals- Connor Barwin (DE/OLB)
Cincinnati The
Cardinals can always do with more talent rushing the passer, and Barwin has
the potential to develop into a true #1 pass rusher. He is
athletic and has good size, and can play both as a down lineman
and a pass rushing OLB. Great fit for Arizona’s
system.
26. Pittsburgh Steelers- Darius Butler
(CB) Connecticut The Steelers aren’t all that strong at
CB outside of Ike Taylor, and Butler is very good value
here.
27. Miami Dolphins (f/WAS)- Derrick Williams
(WR) Penn State Miami and Chad Henne need playmakers at
WR aside from Ginn, and that is exactly what Williams is. Quick and
dynamic, Williams is dangerous whenever he gets the ball, no matter
whether it’s a reception, a reverse, a return or even a direct snap
in a wildcat formation.
28. Carolina Panthers- Stryker Sulak (DE)
Missouri Julius
Peppers may not be in Carolina too much longer, and even if he is,
the Panthers are still relatively weak at DE outside of him. Sulak
is a very good all-round DE, who should be a day one pick in
April.
29. New York Giants- Curtis Taylor (S) Louisiana
State A partner in the defensive backfield for Kenny
Phillips, to even further improve a very good
defense.
30. Tennessee Titans- Herman Johnson
(OG) Louisiana State Johnson is the size of a mountain
at OG, and will form a formidable left hand side together with
Michael Roos here.
31. Indianapolis Colts- Victor Harris (CB) Virginia
Tech Harris is the steal of the draft here. He is
strictly a cover-2 corner, and this class has a lot of talent at CB,
which is why he falls. Indianapolis are happy though, picking up a
future #1 cornerback.
32. Philadelphia Eagles- Chris Clemons (S)
Clemson The Eagles
will need another safety to prepare for when Dawkins retires, and
Clemons should be able to replicate Dawkins’ skillset well. He is a
hard hitter and a guy who flies around the field, and can play both
FS and SS.
