2008 NFL Mock Draft 2 Rounds
By: Dwight Richardson
1.
Miami
Dolphins- Chris Long DE/OLB, Virginia
Chris Long locked himself as the number one pick after a solid
combine. Lays it all on the table on every single play. Long will be a
stud of the Dolphins defense for so many years to come.
2.
St. Louis Rams
– Vernon Gholston DE/OLB, Ohio State
The Rams applied absolutely zero pressure on the QB from the DE
position. If the Rams defense wants to take their level of play to the
next level, they need a player on the defense who will cause massive
terror for opposing quarterbacks.
3.
Atlanta Falcons – Jake Long, OT, Michigan
It doesn’t matter who the starting QB will be for the Falcons next
year, nobody can succeed with the horrendous offensive line protecting
you. Before the Falcons can even think about a franchise QB, they need
to find a franchise left tackle.
4.
Oakland
Raiders – Darren McFadden, RB, Arkansas
The Raiders offense may be very scary in a few years. If Russell
becomes the QB he has the potential to be he was light up opposing team
defenses. Combine that with the incredible running of McFadden, and you
got a very scary offense.
5.
Kansas City
Chiefs – Glenn Dorsey, DT, LSU
Yes, the Chiefs offensive line is horrible, but they need to fix
their problems on defense first. The Chiefs finished 28th in
rush defense allowing over 130 yards a game. The Chiefs will counter
that by selecting Dorsey.
6.
New York Jets -
Leodis McKelvin, CB, Troy
The Jets have made upgrades this offseason all over the place, but
one position that remains a liability is the CB position. The Jets will
continue an impressive offseason by drafting the best CB in this draft
class.
7.
New England
Patriots - Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, CB, Tennessee State
The Pats lost two of their best corners this offseason so they
desperately need to fill the void. Even with Samuels and Gay on the
roster the Pats still needed to get an upgrade at CB.
8.
Baltimore
Ravens - Matt Ryan, QB, Boston College
Steve McNair is old, Kyle Boller is a complete bust, and Troy Smith
is not the answer. The Ravens have never had a premier QB, but they
will get their chance to land one here. I just hope they have better
success with Ryan then they had with Boller.
9.
Cincinnati
Bengals - Keith Rivers, OLB, USC
Every starting LB on the Bengals current roster needs to be
replaced. They can begin the restoration movement by drafting Keith
Rivers to be their premier defender. Unlike other picks the Bengals
have made, they can sleep easy with this one.
10.
New Orleans
Saints - Sedrick Ellis, DT, USC
The Saints continue to make huge upgrades for their woeful defense.
Ellis will be a stud in the middle of the line for the Saints for many
years. The Saints rush defense will grow in leaps and bounds.
11.
Buffalo Bills
- Mike Jenkins, CB, South Florida
The Bills have cut almost every defensive back they had this
offseason. The Bills pass defense is a bend but don’t break style of
play, but they still need to land a legitimate shut down corner.
12.
Denver
Broncos - Ryan Clady, OT, Boise State
The Broncos have no excuse if Travis Henry cannot pile on the yards
this season. The offensive line needs a bit of tweeking with the
retirement of Matt Lepsis. Clady will be a stud.
13.
Carolina
Panthers - Rashard Mendenhall, RB, Illinois
The Panthers were the NFC Champions when they were a top ten rushing
team. John Fox loves to run the ball, so of course Mendenhall is an
enticing option to bolster the running game for the Panthers.
14.
Chicago Bears
- Chris Williams, OT, Vanderbilt
Maybe the horrendous rushing stats the Bears put up weren’t
completely the running backs faults. I mean, they didn’t exactly have a
domination offensive line. Williams will bolster up an extremely weak
and old offensive line.
15.
Detroit
Lions - Jonathan Stewart, RB, Oregon
While Tatum Bell is off predicting stats he can only put up
in Madden, the Lions front office should be searching for a RB who could
actually produce those stats. Stewart will be the punishing running
back the Lions have been searching for.
16.
Arizona
Cardinals - Aqib Talib, CB, Kansas
Bringing back Eric Green was a good move, and Rolle switching to
safety could prove to be a wise decision. Still, the Cardinals were 28th
against the pass, so they’ll need a corner to compliment with Green and
Hood.
17.
Minnesota
Vikings - Phillip Merling, DE, Clemson
The Vikings have holes in the secondary, but any great pass rush can
make a sub-par secondary look better then they are. The Vikings get
zero pass rush, so they desperately need to fix that.
18.
Houston
Texans - Jeff Otah, OT, Pittsburgh
I know Otah doesn’t fit the Texans system, but they have holes at
both tackle position and Otah is the best value here. Otah fix up the
right side of the line, which will allow Chris Brown and Ahman Green to
garner up better yards.
19.
Philadelphia
Eagles - Limas Sweed, WR, Texas
McNabb’s two starting WRs are both smaller wide receivers. McNabb
needs a nice tall receiver to compliment with his smaller options.
Sweed is a solid 6-4 216 wide receiver that will fit perfectly in the
Eagles offense.
20.
Tampa Bay
Buccaneers - DeSean Jackson, WR, California
It is amazing Joey Galloway is still getting it done at his age.
I’d expect him to slow down a bit in this season, so the Bucs needs to
draft a young speed receiver to pick up Galloway’s slack.
21.
Washington
Redskins - Derrick Harvey, DE, Florida
Andre Carter was a pleasant surprise last year with 10.5 sacks.
However, Phillip Daniels, the other starting defensive end, is 35 and
only registered 2.5 sacks. Harvey will bring a much needed upgrade.
22.
Dallas
Cowboys - Devin Thomas, WR, Michigan State
With Terrell Owens and Terry Glenn in their thirties, the Cowboys
need some fresh blood. Devin Thomas would be a steal at this juncture
and be a much more reliable target for Tony Romo then Patrick Crayton.
23.
Pittsburgh
Steelers - James Hardy, WR, Kansas State
Big Ben asked for a big receiver, and the Steelers will listen.
James Hardy is 6-5 and will be just what Big Ben asked for. Hardy will
be a touchdown machine as Big Ben will toss the ball up in the air for
Hardy every time in the red zone.
24.
Tennessee
Titans - Antoine Cason, CB, Arizona
Pac-Man Jones will never be in a Titans jersey again, so the Titans
need to draft his replacement. The Titans defense has grown in huge
strides, as just a few years ago, they were dead last! Another solid
player in the defense can never hurt.
25.
Seattle
Seahawks - Branden Albert, OG, Virginia
The Seahawks signed Mike Wahle, but he is no longer a starter in
this league. The Seahawks never properly replaced Steve Hutchinson so
maybe they finally realize that guard is a real need.
26.
Jacksonville
Jaguars - Kentwan Balmer, DT, North Carolina
The Jaguars traded away Marcus Stroud, so is there any doubt they
will target a DT early? Balmer is the best DT available so they will
most likely pull the trigger. Could see them trade down, and still be
able secure Balmer.
27.
San Diego
Chargers - Pat Sims, DT, Auburn
Jamal Williams is well into his thirties so the Chargers could
target his replacement. Pat Sims is a solid defensive tackle and would
be a wise decision to be taken at this juncture. There will be plenty
of solid OT’s in the latter rounds.
28.
Dallas
Cowboys - Tracy Porter, CB, Indiana
Much like the Wide Receiver situation, the corner backs for the
Cowboys are both in their thirties. Porter is the best corner available
at his juncture and will fill a valuable and important need for the
Cowboys.
29.
San Francisco
49ers - Quentin Groves, DE/OLB, Auburn
The 49ers drafted Manny Lawson in hopes he would become their pass
rushing outside linebacker. He been slowed down by injuries and be a
huge disappointment. The 49ers will try again with the selection of
Groves.
30.
Green Bay
Packers - Brian Brohm, QB, Louisville
This may be a very unpopular pick, but I’m sticking by it. Nobody
knows how good Aaron Rodgers will become. What happens if he is a
complete bust? If he is Brohm will immediately be able to step into the
line up. And if Rodgers plays solid, the Packers will get plenty of
quality offers for Brohm.
31.
New York
Giants - Kenny Phillips, FS, Miami (FL)
Both safety positions are positions that need to be addressed this
draft. Kenny Phillips will be able to take over for the loss of Gibril
Wilson. A strong safety will be taken later to replace James Butler.
